While planning for your Rwanda tour there is several lodges to stay of all category and staying at Sabyinyo is like visiting an old friend. Warm, welcoming and super-cozy, the terracotta chalets look over a landscape straight out of ‘Gorillas in the mist’, complete with rolling hills and lilting fog.
The ever-present Virunga Mountains provide a magnificent backdrop and that’s exactly where you’re headed for your gorilla trek. The lodge is only a few minutes away from the gate into Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and the trek starting point, leaving you more time to enjoy a morning coffee and a hearty breakfast before trekking.
Bisate Lodge
New lodge openings are always exciting and Bisate Lodge is no exception! Due to open in June 2017, this uber – funky creation is promising to inject a touch of glamour into the Rwanda gorilla trekking circuit, with stylish conical chalets modeled on traditional palaces, exquisite interiors and even more spectacular views across the brooding volcanoes.
Gorilla treks will take place in Volcanoes National Park but that’s not all the lodge will offer: we’ve heard rumors of treks to the nearby golden monkeys, Dian Fossey’s grave and the twin lakes of Ruhondo and Burera, visits to the local community and the chance to participate in the reforestation programme. Now that’s what we call a lodge!
Singita Kwitonda Lodge is a thrilling option for travelers seeking an ultra-luxurious base from which to go gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park and generally to experience the best of Rwanda. The guest accommodation, situated within lush meadows and wetlands, will also boast amazing vistas into the national park. It will be connected to the central building along pathways made out of volcanic rock. Of the eight suites, seven will contain one bedroom, with the remaining suite offering two. The four-bedroom villa will be fantastic for an extended family or group. We’ll update this section as soon as we can.
Virunga is one of the oldest lodges in the region but a property with fantastic views over the surrounding lakes. The original luxury gorilla lodge and a property offering a significant saving over Bisate and Singita.
Virunga’s guest accommodation consists of ten stone Banda’s with sturdy doors and glass windows, all linked to the communal building by stone paths. Each Banda is named after an African lake! Two are described as deluxe, while four are doubles and the remaining two are twins. All beds are very comfortable, with mosquito netting to keep irritating insects away.
There is 240V lighting for the bedside lamps. At the foot of each bed, there is a large storage chest. Both furniture and floors are wooden, and there are a few African artefacts and pot plants adorning the surfaces. The en-suite facilities are situated to the side of each Banda. They comprise an eco – toilet, twin washbasins, and a solar-heated shower. There is ample room for hanging clothes and a bench either for sitting or for storing more of your belongings. Outside each Banda, there is a terrace.
Singita’s Kataza House is the very smart little sibling of Singita Kwitonda Lodge. It’s designed to provide an exclusive-use option for a maximum of eight travelers. The price of your stay will include accommodation, three meals daily, a selection of alcoholic and soft drinks, house manager, chef, house staff, and a laundry service. The house is open all year round.
There are four suites, each accommodating a maximum of two adults. All are positioned around the buildings housing the communal facilities the master suite and junior master suite are set fairly well apart from the central hub, while two smaller suites are almost adjacent to the main areas.
The property as a whole blend beautifully with the surrounding landscape, being constructed from local materials and featuring wooden walkways linking the suites to the shared facilities.
Presently no photographs of the suites are available, but Singita mentions that the interiors have been carefully curated with an emphasis on handcrafted details. We’ll update this section as soon as we’ve received further information.
In the meantime, we know that each suite will have a luxurious en-suite full bathroom, an iPad, and access to Wi-Fi, and that the master suite will boast a private pool!
